Try a question
A patient opens his eyes only to pain, makes incomprehensible sounds, and withdraws from painful stimuli. What is his Glasgow Coma Scale score?
Eyes open to pain = 2, incomprehensible sounds = 2, withdraws from pain = 4, for a total of 8. A GCS of 8 or less is your cue to think about protecting the airway.
